If you want one line: Midjourney for style, Ideogram for anything with words in the image, Firefly if you already pay Adobe, and the image tools inside ChatGPT or Google if you only need a handful of pictures a month.

The thing that decides your bill is not how the images look. It is whether you are paying per image, per GPU hour, or per month with a token ceiling. Those three models behave very differently at 20 images a month versus 200.

Midjourney: still the look, now with a meter

Midjourney charges for fast GPU time, not for pictures. Basic gives you 3.3 hours a month, and one still image uses roughly a GPU minute, so that is in the low hundreds of images if you are efficient. Standard ($30) adds unlimited relaxed generation, which is queued but genuinely unlimited, and that is the plan most people land on.

Two things people miss. Stealth mode, so your images stay out of the public gallery, only comes with Pro and above. And if your company makes more than $1 million a year, their terms ask for the Pro tier for commercial use.

Ideogram: pick it when the image needs words

Product mockups, packaging shots, thumbnails and posters all need readable text, and that is where most generators fall apart. Ideogram handles it, which is why the Plus plan at $20 a month is worth it for anyone making social graphics or store images rather than art.

Adobe Firefly: the safe one

The free tier is enough to test. If you pay $9.99 a month you get unlimited standard image generations, and the 2,000 credits are saved for video, audio and the partner models. For a business that wants licensing comfort and already lives in Photoshop, this is the low-drama option.

If you only need a few images

Do not buy a dedicated generator. ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month already makes images for social posts and quick product mockups, and Google's $4.99 AI Plus tier covers the same job with a smaller monthly commitment. Add a specialist tool when you are making more than a handful a week and want control over style.

For product photos specifically

  • Start from a real photo. Image-to-image beats text-to-image, because the shape stays yours and only the background changes.
  • Keep one style reference. Feeding the same reference image into every prompt is what stops a catalogue looking like it was made by five different people.
  • Check commercial rights before you sell. Most plans allow it, some restrict it by company size.
  • Never present generated footage as a photo of a real product. It is a brand risk, not a shortcut.

What we would pay for

A solo creator making social graphics: Ideogram Plus at $20, or ChatGPT Plus if you want one subscription for everything. A design studio doing client work: Midjourney Standard at $30 for volume plus Ideogram for text-heavy layouts. A company that needs licensing cover: Firefly Standard at $9.99.

One note: AI pricing moves fast. We read these numbers off the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026, so check the current price before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How many images do I get for $10 on Midjourney?

It is not an image count. Basic includes 3.3 hours of fast GPU time, and a still image takes about one GPU minute, so roughly a couple of hundred images if you work efficiently. Video eats the same meter much faster.

Which AI image tool renders text properly?

Ideogram is the most reliable for readable text inside an image, which matters for thumbnails, packaging and posters. Most other generators still produce letters that look almost right and are not.

Can I sell images made with these tools?

Generally yes on paid plans, but the terms differ. Midjourney asks for its Pro tier once a company passes $1 million in annual revenue, and Adobe markets Firefly specifically on licensing comfort. Read the terms before you build a catalogue on one tool.

Is there a free option worth using?

Adobe Firefly has a free tier, Leonardo gives 150 fast tokens a day, and Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month. All are fine for testing. Free plans usually restrict commercial use, so upgrade before you publish anything you are paid for.

What about generating images of people?

It works, but it is the weakest use case: hands, teeth and jewellery still fail often, and using a generated person to imply a testimonial or a real customer is a legal risk. Use real photography for people.
