ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro: which $20 one is worth it?
Both cost $20 a month. When two tools cost the same, you're not choosing a price, you're choosing a personality. Here's how they actually differ.
ChatGPT is the wider product. Claude is the one that follows instructions. Most people who use these for work end up paying for both.

| Free plan | Yes, with limits | Yes, with limits |
| Cheap tier | $8 a month (Go) | None |
| Main tier | $20 a month (Plus) | $20 a month, about $17 yearly |
| Heavy tier | $200 (Pro) | $100 or $200 (Max) |
| Limits look like | Caps per model, a five-hour window | A five-hour cap plus a weekly cap |
| Images and video | Included | Not available |
| Best extra | Voice mode, browsing, agent mode | Claude Code on the Pro plan |
Editing and long writing
Here's a test you can run yourself. Paste a 1,200-word draft and a rule list: cut it by 20%, no adverbs, keep every source, plain English.
Claude will usually obey and keep your structure. ChatGPT will often restructure the piece because it thinks it knows better, and quietly drop a rule or two. If your instructions are the point, use Claude.
Everything else
This one isn't close. ChatGPT makes images, produces short videos, holds voice conversations, and browses for current information. Claude won't make you a thumbnail or a five-second clip.
If you're running a small business and want one subscription that covers as many jobs as possible, that's the whole argument for ChatGPT.
The limits will surprise you
Claude Pro has a five-hour session cap and a separate weekly cap. Hit it on a busy editing day and the only fix is a more expensive plan. ChatGPT spreads its limits across models, so when the top model is used up you can usually keep working on a lighter one.
Neither is generous. The difference only shows up if you're in there for hours.
So which one?
- One subscription, lots of different jobs: ChatGPT Plus.
- Writing, analysis, long documents, code: Claude Pro.
- Not sure yet: use the free tiers for a week, then pay for whichever one you kept opening.
Already paying for Google AI Pro at $19.99? That's a fine third option, but it doesn't replace either of these for long documents.

One note: AI pricing moves fast. We read these numbers off the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026, so check the current price before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
They're better at different jobs. Claude follows detailed instructions and handles long documents more reliably, which matters for writing and analysis. ChatGPT does more: images, short video, voice, browsing and far more integrations. Both are $20.
Is one cheaper over a year?
Claude works out slightly cheaper if you pay yearly, around $200 upfront instead of $240. ChatGPT has no published annual discount for Plus.
Do the $20 plans include the newest models?
Not always. Both companies have started putting their newest models behind credits or higher tiers. Check the plan page before you assume.
Can I use both?
Yes, they're separate accounts. Plenty of people pay $40 total and keep each one for what it's best at rather than forcing one tool to do everything.
Is the free tier enough?
For occasional questions, yes. For daily work, no. Free tiers have message caps and limited model choice, and you'll feel it the first busy week.
